Pronunciation
[ɹɛd lain]
[red / lin]
Description
An “L” line that starts and ends at the Howard station connecting to the purple line and the yellow line on the north side, and starts and ends at the 95th/Dan Ryan station on the south side.[1] It is the main underground line through the Loop. During the morning and evening rush hours, the Purple Line runs an express train on the same route north of the Loop.[2]

Usage
Students often use just "the L" to refer to the Red Line since it is the most common L line that students need to use.
Example Sentences
- “I’m gonna take the Red Line to Argyle for pho and bubble tea!”
- “Wanna hop on the L and catch a Cubs game this weekend?”
- “We’re gonna go downtown on the L to see the green river for St.Patty’s; it’s gonna be packed!”
Why It's Wild
Northwestern students benefit from having the city of Chicago directly south of campus. When students travel downtown for pleasure or for jobs/internships, they usually have to take the Red Line unless the Purple Express is running because the Purple Line does not go all the way downtown on a regular basis.
