Description

“Alianza” or “Alianza - Northwestern’s Hispanic/Latino Student Alliance on campus is the largest Hispanic/Latino student organization at Northwestern. The literal meaning of "Alianza" when translated into English means "alliance."

Etymology

The student group was started in 1989. Its purpose on campus was to improve conditions for Latinas/os and to offer students an opportunity to come together and work for the betterment of the Latino community at NU. This commitment resulted in a greater availability of resources for Latinas/os on campus and a greater interest in the Latina/o community and the advancement of the Latina/o community at NU. Their mission statement is: “…is to unite and support its members to work towards the advancement of an empowered, productive, Hispanic/Latin@ presence at this institution. Alianza is a cultural, educational, and social programming body, which also serves as a vehicle for activism.” All of this information was taken from their Facebook page.

Usage

In context of Northwestern it refers to a student group on the Evanston Campus.
