Description
Founded in 2012, Fossil Free NU is a group of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members that have been lobbying the Northwestern administration and Board of Trustees to remove investments from the coal industry. Although this was originally the main goal of the group, Fossil Free NU now also seeks to encourage the divestment from all fossil fuels. According to Fossil Free NU, divestment from fossil fuels is necessary when "addressing climate change, protecting people's health, securing our economic future, and establishing Northwestern as a socially responsible leader." Etymology
Fossil Free NU was originally launched in 2012 as the Responsible Endowment Coalition, but was later renamed to Divest Northwestern or Divest NU. However, there was too much confusion with other divestment campaigns, particularly NU Divest and Divest Northeastern, and so the name of this group was changed to Fossil Free NU.
