Description
An abbreviation for Shirley Welsh Ryan Opera Theater, which primarily serves as a space for choir rehearsals, student recitals, guest lectures, and opera rehearsals and performances. It is located on the first floor on the left hand side of the entrance hall past the elevators.
Etymology
Derived from Shirley Welsh Ryan Opera Theater. This space was named after Shirley Welsh Ryan who, along with her husband Patrick G. Ryan, have donated to Northwestern many times including their most recent $3.75 billion gift as part of the We Will. The Campaign for Northwestern.[1]
It may also be referred to as the Black Box, which is a common name for such a space used for opera performances and plays.
