Definition

A Step, or stepping is a form of percussive dance in which the individual's body is used as an instrument to produce rhythms and sounds through a mixture and variety of steps, claps, and spoken word. At Northwestern, it is used primarily to refer to the tradition that many Greek organizations have, although it is also practiced outside of a Greek context elsewhere.

Etymology

Stepping has its beginnings in the mid-1900s in competitive schoolyard song and dance rituals in historically Black fraternities and sororities as a link to African tribal-dance. Over time, other cultural fraternities and sororities also adopted the tradition of stepping. [1]
