Etymology

The term “boom shakalaka” first appeared in popular culture in the 1969 Sly and the Family Stone song “I Want to Take You Higher”, onomatopoeia for a bass-kick and ensuing cymbal crash. It was later popularized by the NBA Jam series of video games.

Description

BoomShaka is the only joint dance and drumming organization on campus. The group consists of drummers and dancers who perform simultaneously. BoomShaka holds various performances throughout the year, including ReFusionShaka and their own spring show. Boomshaka also goes on tours at various high schools around the nation.

Usage

This term is used primarily by members of the Northwestern dance community. It is used both formally and informally in a written and spoken context.
