Definition

Purple Pantry is a program for students experiencing difficulty accessing food to receive free snacks and groceries. During the school year, it occurs once a week and can be accessed via appointment during the summer and other periods where normal classes are not in session. Purple Pantry is intended to be as barrier-free as possible so they have options for people with many different dietary needs, and also offer things like kitchen utensils or cleaning supplies. Students can also volunteer to work here or even make donations, though much of the food comes from outside donations or are purchased by the program. The program is the result of a partnership with Student Enrichment Services and the Sheil Catholic Center.

Example Sentence

  1. Yesterday we went to Purple Pantry at the Sheil Center to get some free food to cook this week.
  2. I heard that you can volunteer setting up at Purple Pantry so I'm gonna try to go next week and help!

Why It's Wild

Purple Pantry is a uniquely Northwestern phenomenon because of the name and where it takes place and should be considered a Northwestern food pantry. It is a staple for low income students, thus helping a large community on campus.
