Definition

Study hours are the required hours freshman student athlete, or a student athlete that does not meet the minimum GPA requirement need to spend in the library or Walter study room (to study). In order to receive these hours the student-athlete must “swipe in and out” with an attendant in the library or at Walter in order to receive the credit. The freshman regardless of GPA is required to do 6 hours per week during fall quarter, if their GPA meets the requirement, in winter quarter their requirement falls to 3 hours per week and in Spring quarter the requirement is taken away. If the minimum hours are not achieved, then disciplinary action may be taken on the student-athlete by the academic athletic advisor and the coach of the student-athlete may be notified. CLTs and Tutoring may count towards the total per week.

Why It's Wild

Study Hours are a device used by the athletic academic department to require the student-athletes at Northwestern to set aside time to spend on their work. It is widely used within the community.
