Basics

The Essentials

 1. Part of speech representing the lexical function of the term, such as Noun, Verb, Adjective, or Interjection. Others like Symbol, Suffix, Prefix, Phrase, or Proverb may also classify a term.
 2. A pronunciation of the word as outlined by the NeD Respelling system.
 3. Definition of the word, as best as can be said or explained.
 4. A simple example sentence should be provided to illustrate a common usage of the word.
 5. References are not necessary, but encouraged (when applicable) to help make a term more official. If a term can be found in Northwestern websites, magazines, or other sources, it is helpful to include them. References should be added in a separate header.

 1. A word’s part of speech
 2. A word’s pronunciation
 3. A word's usage
 4. A word’s description

Interwiki Links

Interwiki links should be inserted wherever necessary using bracket wikimarkup.

Name of NeD page

Images and Videos

Images and Videos that assist in defining the NeD entry should be right aligned using the following wikimarkup. Formatting works best if the wikimarkup for these elements is entered onto the edit page before any text information.

Images can be uploaded as a file with a caption using the wikimarkup brackets

Videos can be embedded from Youtube and then linked using wikimarkup

Audio Clips

If an audio examples of the pronunciation of a word is included, it should be entered directly underneath the NeD Respelling of the word. NeD includes a custom SoundCloud MediaWiki Widget to play sound clips with this wikimarkup.

Usage Polls

Usage polls are a way to track how many students use this word. They should be included on the right hand side of the page, above any images that might appear on a page.

<div class="thumb tright">
<poll>
NeD Entry Word
</poll>
</div>

If including the poll, it is best to include the code for the poll before the entry markup begins.

Redirects

The mediawiki software supports redirection as a way of guiding users to a single dictionary entry from multiple entry points. Consider, for example, the use of of acronyms and abbreviations versus complete forms.

prereq vs. prerequisite

SPAC vs. Sports Pavilion and Aquatics Center

To handle these cases, one should create a single dictionary entry for the dominant form of the word. Then, unless the alternative forms carry significantly different meanings, users looking up the variant forms should arrive at the entry for the dominant form. This can be achieved through the use of Redirects.

 1. Create a complete entry for the dominant word
 2. Create a blank wiki page for the alternative usage

In the entry for the alternative usage, enter the following:

#REDIRECT dominant word
